Abstract. PSDB is a contemporary social-democratic political party. Although the Fernando Henrique Cardoso administration is rather a centrist administration, and within PSDB we can find centre-to-the-right groups, its militancy is essentially center-to-the-left. What means to be left? All democratic political currents aim stability, social justice, freedom and economic growth. Yet, the two later objectives do not distinguish left from right, while the former two do distinguish. Often the fight for social justice involves some risk to political stability. To be left is to be able to risk social order in name of social justice. PSDB should become a tool for the fight for a democratic regime which combines liberal and socialist ideals.
