Abstract. The author focusses his discussion on the reconstruction of the state in Latin America, in the wake of the crisis it faced in the 1980s. Following an examination of the historical changes that the state went through with the development of capitalism, the author lays out the main characteristics that the social-liberal state should take on in the 21st century, within the context of globalized capitalism, its relations with the market, and the political and institutional conditions for governability in the region.
